Course Policies
Brookhaven’s automotive classes are fast paced, and the lab activities involve working in an actual automotive shop. In an effort to maximize your learning experience and promote a safe, enjoyable learning environment certain rules are required. The following policies are intended to promote a better understanding of the expected student behavior while in the classroom and during the laboratory exercises.

Attendance: Most of the scheduled lab activities must be completed with your assigned lab group and cannot be made up. For these reasons attendance is critical.

  1. Courses of five weeks or less - You are allowed two absences per course; missing a third day of class will result in a failing course grade.
  2. Courses longer than five weeks - You are allowed three absences per course; missing a fourth day of class will result in a failing course grade.

Punctuality: Being late for class is no more acceptable than arriving late for work.

  1. Arriving more than thirty minutes late will be counted as an absence although you will be allowed to join the class in progress. The rules regarding absences will apply.
  2. Quizzes are normally given during the first thirty minutes of class and will not be available for makeup.

Web Based Training: Brookhaven's automotive classes include web-based coursework. The web-based materials are selected to assist you in meeting each course's student learning outcomes. These online assignments must be completed on time with the minimum required score to pass each course and continue with course participation.

  1. SP2 online courses require a minimum score of 80%
  2. Today’s Class online courses require a minimum score of 70%

Cell Phones, PDAs, iPods and Video Games: We all love our gadgets, but not during class. Set your phone on vibrate and return calls during breaks. Do not text during class. This applies both in Brookhaven’s classrooms and shop facilities. Violations of this policy will result in the student being dismissed for the day.

Safety: Our classes include a large amount of hands-on lab activities involving automotive components, power tools, specialized automotive service equipment and live vehicles. It is imperative that all shop and classroom safety procedures are adhered to.

  1. General automotive shop safety is a part of the introductory automotive course and a variety of specialized safety procedures will be covered during specific automotive courses. In addition, a certain level of common sense regarding equipment usage, vehicle operation and shop safety is expected from automotive students. Disregarding any safety related policies will result in automatic removal of the student from class for the duration of the day. The removal will equate to an absence and the rules regarding absences will apply.
  2. Safety glasses must be worn at all times in the automotive shop and during lab activities in the classroom. The safety glasses may not be removed at anytime during lab activities or while in the automotive shop. Violations of this policy will result in the student being dismissed for the day. The dismissal will equate to an absence and the rules regarding absences will apply.
  3. Loose fitting clothing and open toed shoes (sandals, shower shoes, etc.) are not acceptable wear during lecture or lab. You may change into appropriate clothing BEFORE class. There are facilities and lockers located in the Q building, but you will need to provide your own lock. Violations of this policy will result in the student being dismissed for the day. The dismissal will equate to an absence and the rules regarding absences will apply.

Tools: All automotive students are required to purchase a basic automotive toolset before beginning their second automotive course at Brookhaven College. Brookhaven's required toolset inventory list is available from automotive workgroup office. Not having the required tools will result in a failing course grade and you will be unable to register for additional automotive courses.

General Policies: The following policies are provided to assist you in meeting the expectations of Brookhaven College and your instructor.

  1. Outside assignments must be completed in a timely manner. If the assignment is required for successful course completion you will still be required to complete the work, but the assignment's grade will be reduced.
  2. All students are expected to be present and awake during the day’s lecture and lab activities. If a student does not appear to be contributing to the class the student will be dismissed for the day. The dismissal will equate to an absence and the rules regarding absences will apply.
  3. Disrupting class and harassing your fellow students will not be tolerated. If you have a question or comment related to the class ... share it with the entire class. Students disrupting the class excessively will be dismissed for the day. The dismissal will equate to an absence and the rules regarding absences will apply.
  4. Racial or sexual comments will result in automatic removal of the student from class for the duration of the day. The removal will equate to an absence and the rules regarding absences will apply.
